Free AI with no card: 5 signs there is no small print

“Free” can mean three different things: truly free, free while a trial lasts, or free until the credits run out. A free AI that really needs no card answers from the first message, does not change the rules halfway through the conversation and does not ask for a card, not even “to verify”. You can check it in 3 minutes, before giving any details.

The promise appears on hundreds of pages, and not all of them keep it equally. What changes is when the payment shows up: before you start, after a few messages, or when you want something more than a single question.

Three meanings of “free”

The first is literal: you type and it answers, today and a year from now, without paying anything. The second is a trial with an expiry date, which ends in a charge if you do not cancel. The third is a balance: you have credits and, when they run out, you have to pay. All three are advertised the same way and they do not mean the same thing.

Sign 1: it answers before asking you for anything

Open the page and type a question without clicking anything else. If it asks for a card, a phone number or to “continue with” another account before answering, you already have your answer. A truly free AI puts no screen between the text box and the reply.

Sign 2: there is no credit counter

Look for a balance, some “tokens” or a number of remaining messages on screen. A counter that goes down is the mark of a service that sells top-ups. If after 15 or 20 messages none appears and the conversation carries on as before, the “free” is literal.

Sign 3: the trial has no expiry date

A 7-day trial with your card on file is a delayed subscription. If the service talks about a “trial period”, about “cancel before” or about a “plan” when it registers your payment method, it is not free, it is a demo.

Sign 4: the card is not requested “to verify”

A card that is only “verified” is still a stored card. A payment form on an AI that advertises itself as free is a bad sign, even if they say nothing will be charged. A truly free service has no reason to ask for it.

Sign 5: the pricing page confirms it

Look for the sections on pricing, limits and terms. A truly free service says it plainly and explains how it earns its living. If those pages do not exist or are vague, be wary, whether the service is free or paid.

How to test it in 3 minutes

Open an incognito window, type 3 questions in a row and a fourth, longer one. Note whether a payment, a balance or an account appears at any point. Repeat from another device. If nothing appears in either case, it delivers what it promises.

The questions free things deserve

Can a free AI really work without asking for a card?

Yes. It only needs a server with the model and a text box. Asking for a card is a commercial decision, not a technical requirement.

Why do some AIs ask for a card if they are free?

To turn the trial into a subscription, and because a card is a convenient barrier against repeated use. It is one more piece of data you hand over.

What happens if they ask for a card after a few messages?

Decide whether paying is worth it or switch service. What should not happen is finding out halfway through an important task.

How do I cancel a free trial?

Cancel it before the renewal date from the account of the service or of the store where you signed up. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.

Open the chat, type your first question and check that nobody asks you for a card or credits.
